They really believed in creativity; it’s something they imparted very deeply.” From then on, “It wasn’t really a normal childhood. I had a relationship with music.” Scrapbook photos show a little girl in ponytails, her tiny fingers on the keys. It was during this period that I started to understand the importance of human health and well-being. "We would start working at midnight and she'd be at my house until four in the morning. Sometimes, I'd be sitting watching television and start stitching a wig." Those long hours produced stunning recreations of hairstyles that were generation defining. "It wasn't really seen — she wore it a couple of times on the red carpet. We had a few different colors because we made several of them." Alexander bet on black. "I feel like it didn't get the play that it should have gotten, so I'm glad [the museum] trusted me to add it."

They are interested on researching how to improve the relationship between nature and humans through design. In their spare time, Karla likes to be involved in any outdoor or art related activity. After an injury sidelined her piano studies in college, she went on to get her master’s at Harvard Graduate School of Design and taught at Rhode Island School of Design, where she is now a Professor Emeritus. Her work worldwide recently earned her accolades from the American Society of Landscape Architects, which named her to its Council of Fellows for 2014. But Kim says the most rewarding praise comes from those who engage with the work of her Allston-based team at Mikyoung Kim Designs—touching, smelling, hearing, and yes, taking selfies at these projects around the world.

We collected stone from multiple quarries around the nine provinces from North and South Korea, and created nine source points through these nine different stones. The idea was that these two separate countries could in the future come together and work together…so the material itself was meaningful but also the process was meaningful—the South Korean government reached out and got these stones from North Korea. Karla oversees the day-to-day operations of the MYKD office and supports the marketing team.
