Initially reluctant, or at best only very mildly interested, Louis XV let Gabriel develop his project and agreed to send French architects to Italy to inspect the country’s finest halls. The aim was to bring back all the information and technical data necessary to allow Versailles to build a perfect theatre. It would not be designed to host ordinary shows (performances given regularly in the Court for a relatively small audience) but grand events with a large number of spectators (nearly 1,500 people).

Mexico’s most iconic artists (and infamously stormy lovers) leap off the canvas in this new musical portrait from Grammy Award-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. When a desperate wish on Day of the Dead reunites Diego Rivera with his wife Frida Kahlo, he jumps at the chance to seek forgiveness. But Frida refuses to return to the world that caused her so much pain, until another departed soul inspires her to look back at the art (and the man) she once loved.
Teatro dell’Opera di Roma 2023-24 Review: La Sonnambula
Mr. Ciaramitaro earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rollins College and studied with tenor Richard Owens. Russian baritone Igor Golovatenko quickly made a name for himself on both the concert platform and operatic stage after his debut in the 2006 Russian premiere of Delius' Eine Messe des Lebens with the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra. Although the Royal Opera survived the French Revolution, it was emptied of all its furniture, mirrors, lighting and decor. The stage and its mechanics were little affected by the works, but the changes made to the hall altered its original layout (especially the King’s private box) and appearance (uniform red paint with gold crosses and framed with false red marble covered over the colours of the 18th century). The theatre was used on a small number of occasions for official performances, such as the one for the inauguration of the new museum on 10 June 1837.

However, she quickly proceeded to deliver a mesmerizing rendition of “Regnava nel silenzio” that elicited a, virtually, raucous audience response, before delivering a beautiful and convincing duet with lover Edgardo to close the act. The Royal Opera is one of the world’s leading opera companies and the most important in London. The current music director is Antonio Pappano with Oliver Mears the Director of Opera. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is shared with the Royal Ballet and the company has a large permanent chorus. Balancing a rich heritage with more modern fare, The Royal Ballet are not infrequently accused of safe programming (somewhat justifiably). A wealth of Swan Lakes and Nutcrackers every season with new work largely kept to 2-3 new short ballets a year.

Having studied at the Moscow Academy of the Choral Arts with Dmitry Vdovin, Mr. Golovatenko was awarded first prize at the St. Petersburg Three Centuries of Classical Romance Competition and second prize at Dresden's International Competizione dell'Opera. A leading baritone at the Bolshoi Opera, Igor Golovatenko will return there this season as Shchelkalov in Boris Godunov, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Rodrigo in Don Carlo, and Robert in Iolanta. He has previously appeared at the Bolshoi as Germont in La Traviata, Posa in Don Carlo and Marcello in La Boheme.

Diego approaches Frida and says “Let us go home.” Diego and the chorus sing “Close your eyes” as they lead Frida back to her beloved home, which magically assembles around them. Diego invites Frida to sit beside him, but she is drawn to her easel.Frida sings “Hand me my brush,” about wanting to return to painting, as Diego looks on. The two end with, “We made fun of love, to love one another freely.” Frida looks at him, scrutinizes his clothes, his face, his hands.
Deborah Warner directs and Mark Elder conducts a cast that includes British singers Allan Clayton, Bryn Terfel and John Tomlinson alongside Maria Bengtsson and former Jette Parker Young Artist Jacques Imbrailo. This exciting new production will have its premiere in Madrid in April 2021, before coming to the Royal Opera House in March 2022. I have opined previously on the merits of young Scottish tenor and Jette Parker Artist member Michael Gibson, and he appears here again displaying great vocal talents and acting ability as Normanno, a somewhat consigliere to the villainous Enrico.
To date, Conlon has conducted more than 500 international performances of Verdi’s repertoire. Conlon closes his LA Opera season honoring the 100th anniversary of Puccini’s death, conducting Turandot, Puccini’s final opera composed in 1924. The Royal Opera, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, is one of the world’s leading opera companies.
The tale, even in its most simplistic form, is testament enough to the gross inequalities and inequities of the time and the fact that Lucia’s brother, Enrico, deliberately plotted, lied, and fabricated to coerce his sister into marrying for his own gain is an act that would warrant unanimous audience repulsion from all quarters. I found certain aspects of the production and direction to be superfluously brutal and bordering on being misandristic. Enrico was a sufficiently unpleasant individual without having him explode with threatening, violent menace when insisting that Lucia marries Arturo. Lucia’s miscarriage is garish, the entire lower half of her body drenched with the blood of her loss, a symbol of the perceived crimes inflicted upon her by men, yet the crime she herself commits, a murder via multiple, stabbing creates no visible blood at all.
Frida is instantly racked by pain, and the moment becomes almost psychedelic, “The memory of pain.” Diego invites her to paint with him, and three Fridas appear (like her own painted images), beckoning her into the canvas. Diego and Frida enter the picture frame, creating their own alternate reality.Frida and Diego try to cling to their impossible dream of staying together inside a painting even as the chorus of departed souls sings of the end of the Day of the Dead and prepares to return to the underworld. Catrina begins marshalling the souls, and Leonardo bids a final farewell to the world. Catrina angrily notices Frida’s absence, but keeps her procession moving.Left alone, Frida realizes that she and Diego cannot live in a dream of art—that their art was always a response to the world. Catrina reminds him that it’s not up to him, but Frida begs her to help him.Catrina and Frida sing Diego toward death (“Close your eyes”). When she senses that Diego is ready, Catrina calls out to the god of Mictlan, and Diego succumbs to his mortality. As Frida sings that she and Diego will be united for eternity, the set opens up to reveal an Aztec pyramid and the God of Mictlan.
